Jun 6 – Are We There Yet?

So, it is now warm enough (remember I said it rains in Cincinnati and then it gets warm?) – well, it is warm, often meaning hot. The plants are safe to put out, the soil is warm enough to germinate seeds – including corn, which can rot in cold, damp soil if put in too soon. None of this is my issue: time, or lack thereof, is my issue – complicated by a nasty storm last night that created havoc on the deck and it’s plant containers, including 5 flats of seedlings I have been nursing since mid March. I really just want all this in the ground but there is much yet to do and it can’t be done with soil that received rain and hail last night. Not sure how much, but too much to perform these tasks (what is needed to proceed):
  1. Move all the last volunteers from BG
  2. Till the beds (remember, I have been out of town the last 3 weekends at soccer tournaments)
  3. Re-form the beds into raised areas and remove any remaining debris
  4. Re-define the paths and put down Preen to prevent weed germination
  5. Put in plants, seedlings: tomotoes, peppers, basil, cilantro, marigolds and volunteer sunflowers
  6. Sow seeds:

Veggies: okra, fennel, beets, beans, eggplant, cucumber, corn, pumpkins, acorn squash, spaghetti squash, zucchini, cateloupe and watermelon

Herbs: dill, borage, parsley, cilantro

Greens: arugula, black-seeded simpson, bib, mesclun

Flowers: baby’s breath, bells of ireland, cosmos, four o’clocks, poppies and zinnia, sunflowers

7- Mulch with grass clippings to reduce the need to water, smother weeds, and break down into compost for when we till next year…

This weekend has to be it – no more rain, no more soccer (after tryouts…) – time to get some real dirt under my nails!
